Florida Archives Month Proclamation Signed by Governor Rick Scott

The Society of Florida Archivists, in conjunction with the Society of American Archivists, celebrates October as American Archives Month, a collaborative effort by professional organizations and repositories around the nation to highlight the importance of records of enduring value. Archivists are professionals who assess, collect, organize, preserve, maintain control of, and provide access to information that has lasting value.

To promote Archives Month in Florida, SFA has created a web page for information about how you can participate. SFA will be sponsoring an online exhibit and Gaylord's Archival Products division will conduct two preservation workshops; one in Orlando on October 1 at 1:00pm, and the other in Tallahassee on October 21 at 6:00pm. Further information is forthcoming. These informative workshops, designed for individuals with little or no preservation experience or for the more experienced user, will provide straightforward information, helpful hints, and simple steps to take for the care, handling, and storage of various materials commonly found in institutional and personal collections.

In addition, we will keep a calendar of events to which we ask everyone to contribute, so that we may also promote activities undertaken at your institutions and in your communities.
The online exhibit will be accessible via the SFA Archives Month web page, and will be made up of digitized materials from the rich archival collections around our state, celebrating both Archives Month and the 500th anniversary of Ponce De Leon's arrival in Florida. Viva Florida!

SUBMITTING INFORMATION AND MATERIALS: DEADLINE EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER 30

SFA is also asking members to submit information and photos for the creation of a comprehensive events calendar and a special online exhibit celebrating both American Archives Month and Viva Florida 500, the 500th Anniversary of Juan Ponce de León's arrival in the state. Selected images will also be included on a poster promoting American Archives Month, which will be distributed to all SFA members. Please limit photo submissions to five high-quality images and provide a 40-word maximum description of each image. Images and text may be submitted by September 30 using this submission form.

Please send calendar events to our Archives Month by August 30. For questions or comments, please contact Sandra Varry (407.823.5427).
